The band Europe, who wrote the immortal hit “The Final Countdown”, will take part in the 10th attempt to beat the Guinness Guitar World Record in Wrocław. The May weekend will also feature performances by Marcus Miller and other artists.
- The Guinness Guitar World Record is not just a feast for guitar players. It is an event attended by seniors, young people, children, businessmen, teachers and entire families, i.e. all those willing to join in the celebrations and feel the unique sprit of the event – says Leszek Cichoński, the man who first came up with the idea of the Thanks Jimi Festival, which regularly features the Guinness Guitar World Record. The attempts to beat the record have failed for the last two years. In 2009, “Hey Joe” was played by 6346 guitar players, in 2010 it was 4597, while last year – 5601. Maybe the band Europe will encourage more guitar lovers to come to the Wrocław Market Square. The band formed in 1979 and gained worldwide fame with hits such as "The Final Countdown” or the rock ballad “Carrie”.
In 1992, the Swedish band suspended their activity, but they reformed 11 years later. After their reunion, the band released a record entitled "Start from the Dark”, which was preceded by the single “Hero”. Europe’s last record “Last Look at Eden”, released in 2009, received many excellent reviews all over the world, and “UK's Classic Rock Magazine” shortlisted it for its “Album of the Year” award.
One day after the attempt to beat the record with Europe, Marcus Miller will perform on the Słodowa Island. He is an American musician, composer, arranger, but predominantly a bass guitar player. In 1980 he was noticed by Miles Davis and invited to collaborate with him. In 1984, two years after completing their work together, Marcus recorded his first solo album, which set him on a path to becoming a world-famous bass guitar player. His characteristic playing style contributed to the popularisation of so-called slapping, which consists in hitting the bass guitar strings with the thumb, thereby producing a unique, percussive sound made by the string hitting the fret. In 2001 he received a Grammy Award for the best jazz album. He gained recognition not only as a solo artist, but also as a music producer.
