Opis

The organisers of the Jazz on the Oder festival are revealing the first performers for the event’s 48th edition. We already know that the American composer and saxophone player Brandford Marsalis will be one of the stars of this jazz event taking place between 18 and 22 April 2012.

Branford Marsalis comes from a very musical family. His father was a jazz musician, as are his three brothers. Branford – the oldest of the children – began his jazz adventure in the 1980s. A few years later he would already accompany Sting and take part in Miles Davis’ tours. He is the co-author of the scores for Spike Lee’s movies: “Mo' Better Blues” and “Do the Right Thing”. This year’s performance as part of the Jazz on the Oder festival is likely to be his only appearance in Poland, although the artist has performed here many times already. Apart from performing live in Poland, he also appeared as a guest on Anna Maria Jopek's "ID” album.

Apart from the oldest of the Marsalis brothers, other artists to perform during the festival include Freddy Cole, Jon Faddis and the Darek Oleszkiewicz Quartet, together with the outstanding American saxophone player, composer and multi-instrumentalist Chris Potter, who was invited to participate in this project.

In line with the tradition, this year’s festival will also feature a contest for the most eminent jazz personality. Previous winners of the accolade include Włodzimierz Nahorny, Krzesimir Dębski, Jarosław Śmietana, Piotr Baron, Andrzej Zaucha and Ewa Bem. Participation is welcome from anyone who is under 30 years old on 18 April this year. Applications can be sent until 5 March, while the full programme of the festival will be announced in mid-February.
