See the new airport before it opens
City news
Although there is still more than a month remaining until the opening of the new Wrocław airport terminal, we can already bring you details on what travellers can expect to see in March.
On Friday, the authorities of the city of Wrocław and of the Airport officially confirmed that the opening of the new terminal will take place on 29 February, and first planes will depart from it during the first weekend of March. Today we take on the role of the first passengers.
Dual carriageway access
It all starts with getting there, which, since the end of December, is possible using a dual carriageway that will take you all the way to the car park with 1100 parking spaces. Travellers will be able to book their parking space online. The front of the terminal will also have a special, free short-term parking zone, where it will be possible to leave the car, take one’s bags and wave the driver goodbye. – Cars will be able to spend only a few minutes there, as they will be monitored by a special registration plate identification system, which will be able to establish the duration of the stay in front of the terminal – said Przemysław Marcinkowski, the project manager working on the development of the Wrocław Airport.
21 check-in desks
The departure and arrival hall takes up an area of about 5300 square metres – says Marcinkowski. We have prepared 21 standard check-in desks, as well as one desk for people travelling with outsize luggage. After check-in, the luggage goes through a four-stage security control process, including a 3D scan, after which it is assigned to the relevant plane. The same system is in place at the Heathrow Airport in London, as well as at the Barcelona Airport.
Jet bridge or bus
After check-in, the passengers pass through one of seven security checkpoints, and then go to the first floor, to the zone devoted to passengers leaving Wrocław. – There are 12 gates in this area and passengers use special jet bridges to board their planes directly. The right side is for passengers taking a bus ride to the plane, while the left side is for those using the jet bridge – said Marcinkowski. There is enough space for as many as 16 aeroplanes on the new apron, which is adjacent to the new terminal.
Long escalator to the observation deck
The airport observation deck situated on the second floor, which features the Sky Pub, is a true ornament and one of the main attractions of the terminal. It affords wonderful views of departing and arriving planes, as the deck is located in front of the runway. Leading to the highest floor is one of Wrocław’s longest escalator, situated in the very centre of the public hall. The arrivals zone is situated to the left of the hall, while baggage claim area for passengers arriving in Wrocław can be found deeper in the hall.
VIP-class terminal
There is a special VIP area to the right, which features a secluded space for the most special airport guests. It is a terminal within the terminal, as VIP travellers can take advantage of a separate entrance, a dedicated check-in system, a VIP car park and dedicated personnel. VIPs are taken to their planes in limousines. For those entitled to use it, there is a Business Lounge situated on the first floor, which features modern chairs with footrests.
Airport shopping
The public hall also features more than 4.5 square metres of commercial space - shops, restaurants and service outlets. – There are known and popular brands there – says Monika Półtorzycka-Jon from the Wrocław Airport’s marketing department. Right next to the entrance, travellers will find a Coffee Heaven cafe, a Ruch press store and a 1 Minute kiosk, which belongs to the well-known HDS Polska network. The centre of the public hall is occupied by the airport’s largest restaurant from the Restauracje Krawczyk network, whose guests can admire the view of the airport apron and runway thanks to the special glass facade. Right next to it is the Sky Pub, offering a wide selection of alcoholic beverages and different snacks. The departure hall also features airline offices, tour operator outlets, car rental outlets and currency exchange points. There are also more shops and service points in the area for passengers leaving Wrocław, including two large duty free shops. The closed area also features a boutique with clothes by the German brand Emmanuel Berg, an S&A jewellery shop, a Flying Bistro restaurant belonging to the HDS network, as well as a Virgin bookstore, occupying a surface area of more than 100 square metres.
